Arrow head

A term normally used in the context of a structural table support. A "V" or arrow shaped base positioned centrally or at both ends of a long table

Referring to a rounded edge applied to furniture.

 

 

Cable Management

Refers to a system to keep the cables associated with todays technology in a neat and orderly fashion. This can be in the form of a wire rack under the desk top, through the leg panels of some desking systems or through a cable snake from desk top to floor.

Cantilever leg/frame

"A long bar or beam which is fixed at only one end to a vertical support and is used to hold a structure such as an arch, bridge or shelf in position" (www.dictionary.co.uk) In relation to office furniture, this term applies to desking and seating. In Desking it can be a C shaped frame placed at either end of the desk maximising the usable space to the front whilst providing maximum support. Examples of cantilever Desks and chairs

 

 

Castors

A castor is a wheel which attaches to the bottom of certain pieces of furniture and provides a pivoting action so that the piece of furniture is easily movable.

 

 

Chamfer edge

Referring to a angular edge applied to furniture.

 

 

Credenza

A rectangular piece of storage furniture mostly seen in executive or boardroom areas. Popular uses for a credenza unit include containing a fridge, storage of audio visual equipment or storing crockery, glassware and cuttlery for use in boardroom areas.

 

 

Cruciform Base

Cruciform = A cross shaped structure. In this context applying to a table base or support.

 

 

D-End

A "D-end" is just that a "D" or semi-circular end to a table or desk.

 

 

Glides

A static alternative to castors providing an anti skid alternative, ideal for wooden floors.

 

 

 

Height adjustable arms

Chair arms that adjust in height allowing flexibilty with different desk heights and maximum support for the end user.

 

 

Linking facility

A chair linking facility will help prevent meeting or conference chairs from being scattered during an alarm to vacate an area and also ensure that the chairs stay linked and neat.

 

 

Lumbar adjustment

Lumbar adjustment can be in various forms but will mostly be wind or pump up and provides an adjustable support in seating that will help to alleviate back pain provoked by existing lower back problems and can encourage improved posture to aid back pain prevention.

 

 

MFC

Melamine faced chipboard. A material used in the manufacture of office furniture.

 

 

Pedestal

Refers to a 2, 3 or 4 drawer cabinet sited beside the desk for personal storage or filing.

 

 

Seat Slide

A function that allows the seat of the chair to be adjusted forward or backward and allows more comfort and leg support for taller people.

 

 

Synchro Mechanism

Office chair seat and back adjustment that can be locked in place or can be left in freeflow allowing the chair to tilt with the user providing optimum support whilst promoting movement and improving circulation and productivity.

 

 

Veneer

A thin layer of wood used to cover a cheaper material.
